Join Elizabeth Warner, Ed.M. Psy.D., for a brief introduction to Sensory Motor Arousal Regulation Treatment, or SMART. SMART is a bottom-up therapy that was developed for children and adolescents with complex trauma. Developmental Trauma Disorder as a descriptive diagnosis accounts for the extensive trauma histories and resulting pervasive dysregulation in children and youth. However, many adult clients with complex trauma (C-PTSD) experienced ongoing neglect and/or abuse in their early development have significant problems with emotional regulation, and unintegrated fragments of these experiences in their sensory systems, bodies, and pre-conscious minds. The developmental nature of these fragments can be addressed with this in mind.
The Story of SMART: SMART was developed in the early 2000's to address the challenge of regulation encountered by trauma therapists, especially those working with children and adolescents with complex trauma histories. Hear how it grew out of clinical interactions into a successful, evidence-based model.
Learn the Fundamentals: The fundamentals of the model will be illustrated through three conceptual images: SMART Spiral, SMART Regulation Map, and Developmental Hierarchy. Plus, gain an understanding of the specially designed SMART room.
Explore Case Examples: Explore three case examples (a child, an adolescent, and an adult) that demonstrate the model, its successes, and how it can work as a complete treatment in some cases and complement other modalities in other cases.

Elizabeth Warner, Ed.M. Psy.D.
Elizabeth Warner, Ed.M. Psy.D., is a licensed psychologist with 40 years of experience working with children and families in psychiatric inpatient and outpatient settings, schools, mental health clinics and residential treatment. Early in her career, she worked with autistic and traumatized children and their parents, using innovative treatment methodologies and videotape for process study at the Language & Cognitive Development Center.
Since 2008, Elizabeth’s focus has been on the development of an innovative bottom-up treatment for children from 1.5 years to 22 years whose lives have been impacted by chronic stress and complex trauma, and their caregivers. As project director at the Trauma Center at JRI, a center of excellence in trauma treatment, training and research, she oversaw training and consultation in Sensory Motor Arousal Regulation Treatment (SMART) for outpatient, in-home, therapeutic day school, and residential treatment settings in the U.S., Canada, Norway, Hong Kong, and Singapore. She collaborated with community-based therapists to develop SMART applications for in-home therapy and constructed two videotape coding systems for studying regulatory processes in treatment. Currently, she is developing SMART for adults, and has applied it, as well as DBR, as an adjunct to trauma psychotherapy. The SMARTmoves team, now located in Auburndale, Massachusetts continues development of curriculum and training as well as collaborating with therapists wishing to apply SMART in other cultures and diverse settings.
